More about Promise for HIP

Through the Peers Reaching Out and Modeling Intervention Strategies (PROMISE) for High Impact Prevention (HIP) program, people living with HIV/AIDS share their inspiring stories of positive behavior change like engaging in HIV care, taking medication as prescribed, disclosing HIV status to sex partners, seeking substance misuse recovery services, etc. These stories are personal accounts of positive behavior change about how and why the participants took steps resulting in positive effects on their lives. The stories are presented as printed materials via face-to-face community outreach or through digital means like social media or email.

To help get these stories out to the community, the PROMISE for HIP program also depends on Peer Advocates. These are people living with HIV who distribute the stories to their community, talk about the story, and help connect other people living with HIV to services through The Pride Center. The Peer Advocates are a critical part of the program since they are able to connect with those who can be inspired by the stories. Stories can be distributed in print or digitally through social media or email.

If you are interested in being a Role Model, Peer Advocate, or both, we would welcome a conversation with you. Please contact the Wellness Navigation Coordinator listed on this page.

Here’s an example of a HIP Role Model Story in action:

Through the PROMISE for Stigma program, people who have experienced stigma in their lives are asked to share their experience and the impact it had on them and others. These stories can be related to the stigma experienced because of any aspect of who you are – religion, race, ability, gender, mental health, etc. Your experience does not have to have a positive outcome or resolution but rather the intent is to share how stigma can affect individuals and, indeed, that it is not always resolved. We then promote these stories in print and on social media with the intent to educate the community about stigma and its negative impact. These stories can include your name and photo or be anonymous.

If you are interested in being a Stigma Role Model we would welcome a conversation with you. Please contact the Wellness Navigation Coordinator listed on this page.

Intervention Core Elements

  • Community identification process to collect information about the network, including HIV/STD risk behaviors and HIV care continuum.
  • Create role model stories based on personal accounts from individuals in the intervention population who have made positive behavior change.
  • Recruit and train peer advocates from the intervention population to distribute role model stories and prevention materials.
  • Continuous evaluation to capture behavior change within the intervention population.
